German Shepherds - Rescues - Character and General Appearance

Pure bred German Shepherds are naturally alert, watchful and protective. They are known for their implicit faithfulness toward their master and wariness of strangers. But, if a stranger gains trust of the dog, lifelong and unswerving friendship is guaranteed. German shepherds have considerable power and they are more often than not excellent workers.

German Shepherd Dogs are relatively big. They have remarkably large ears and faithful and intelligent look. The nose is always black. In general, they resemble wolves in appearance, which is just another reason for occasional setbacks in popularity throughout the history of the breed.

German shepherds have a light and effortless amble. This is in large due to the distinctive diagonal pattern of the movement of the hind and the front legs. This means, that, for instance, the right hind leg acts in unison with the left front leg. Correctly set rib cage provides for easy and loose motion of the elbows, which also adds to the lightness of gait. Pure bred German Shepherd dogs have the sternum at the same level with the elbows.

German shepherds occur in black with tan, light brown or gray markings. Opinions vary regarding the German Shepherd breed. There are white shepherd dogs, which some consider as belonging to the breed. Yet, some specialists consider these dogs to be a separate breed. And, although the coat is relatively short with an undercoat, there are long coated species that some breeders favor. Generally, it is more preferable for coat to be not too long but this is no serious fault.
