This is a herding dog, originally bred from sheep-tending stock in rural Germany. The founder of the breed was Cavalry Captain Max Von Stephanitz, who developed the breed through judicious inbreeding and crossbreeding, from 1899 to 1936. This dog is not a backyard dog and requires a lot of training. It possesses much energy that should be used properly. Thus the dog needs a lot of care and attention. The dog was bred specifically for working abilities and temperament.

Some unknowledgeable owners breed their purebred dogs without having any idea of hereditary disorders; they want to have purebred puppies, but don’t understand the necessity of screening a sire and a dam. Some irresponsible breeders aim at gaining maximum profit and produce puppies without caring much for their health and for the improvement of the breed in general. Indiscriminate breeding is the main cause of hereditary defects within the breed. Hip and elbow dysplasia, epilepsy, dwarfism, heart disorders and many other problems typical of the breed can be prevented by careful screening the breeding stock and culling sires and dams with defective genes.
