These smart dogs are quick to learn, if provided with enough mental stimulation and positive motivation. Without proper socialization and obedience training, these dogs cannot be reliable and cannot be taught difficult tasks. Training should not consist of drill and repetitions only, because the dog will soon get bored. If the owner is not strong enough and cannot show who the boss is, these dogs tend to become dominating, as their herding and protective instincts are still very strong. Without enough exercise, these dogs tend to develop behavior problems, so they are not recommended for people who cannot spend much time with the pet.

As the WWI began, the name of the breed was changed to Aslatian. In 1977, following numerous campaigns by breeders the name of the breed was changed back to the original one by which it is known in the USA, Australia, and most other countries. Though the dog was used at first as a herding dog, it was also taught different other tricks. Thanks to its intelligence the dog was used as a guard dog, a guide for the blind, as a rescue dog and even as a police dog.
